Position Description

Nature Publishing Group – the prestigious international scientific publishing company – seeks a Portfolio Manager to work in our New York office as an integral part of the team developing NPG’s growing portfolio of online products. The Porfolio Manager will report directly to the CTO and assist our senior executives in providing cutting edge Digital Media content across our digital properties. This position offers an impressive challenge for someone with a proven ability to lead digital projects to be able to help create a roadmap for the implementation and delivery cycle of emerging technologies. The right person will be a dynamic change agent capable of driving large scale projects and implementations as well as an ambassador within the company, leading various collaborative efforts across the organization.

This position is responsible for the coordination of project planning, resourcing, reporting and other project management office activities across all NPG functions; creates and maintains a uniform approach to project management and serves as a change agent for continuous improvement through improved/enhanced methodologies.

Primary tasks for this position include:

  • Maintain the integrated plans covering all strategic and essential programs and projects. Tracks project metrics for all projects throughout the organization. Maintains centralized accountability for management of project portfolio.
  • Reporting on the NPG resources available and required and actual time of all web projects with respect to:
    • Project & resource scheduling & time-tracking
    • Risk management & issue resolution procedures
    • Cost estimating, tracking, reconciliation & reporting
  • Maintain Program ‘Risks and Issues’ log and chase timely resolution of actions; ensure Program risks and issues are ‘visible’ and key stakeholders are aware of progress.
  • Works with senior management to provide strategic and tactical advice on program/project planning and execution Provide recommendations on project strategy, training, communication, and resource planning.
  • Drive the continuous development of project management methodology and culture. Collaborate with project managers, business analysts; department heads and staff to develop standardized procedures related to project management.
  • Coordinate Project Managers to create and distribute project status reports, communicate related projects between departments to ensure timely and efficient implementation of projects, as well as find efficiencies and collaboration opportunities
  • Extend existing and/or develop project management tools, techniques & best practices.
Requirements:
  • 7-12 years progressively working in a production or development environment
  • 2-3 years in a project management leadership role
  • Proven project management experience within a complex digital product environment, managing development & delivery
  • Knowledge of publishing practices & industry issues are highly desirable
  • Project management & business acumen; project management methodologies/tools/techniques, project lifecycle stages including conceptualization, planning, execution and termination
  • A proven track record in contract negotiation, vendor management, statistical analysis
  • Capability of developing customized solutions to solve complex, integrated business problems
  • Excellent communication skills; with a methodical approach to tracking, recording, and presenting information
  • MS Project or other project management software; Visio or equivalent.
Education:
Bachelors Degree is required; Masters Degree in Project Management or project management certification is preferred.
